It Is About More Than Makeup

These are my thoughts, yo.

It Is About More Than Makeup

I don't have many memories of my mother looking in the mirror and liking what she saw. I have maybe three photographs of her, actually. She avoided mirrors and cameras often. I do have vivid memories of her lining her eyelids. She'd pull down her eye and gently line the pink skin with a blue kohl pencil. Blue on blue. Her deep blue eyes were stark against the whites of her eyes outlined with another astonishing navy blue eyeliner. My mother had rules about makeup, shaving, and silk bikini underwear that I still don't understand. Those rules, though, were marks of mothering to me. They were ways that she guided me to adulthood in her own way. Addison is four years old. We play in my makeup. We talk about Addison and Momma things. I teach her that if you should enjoy makeup, you should choose an eyeshadow primer forever and ever amen. It is about more than makeup. These moments are about connection and fun and mothering. I want her to have memories of seeing me look in the mirror and loving my own reflection. We giggled and applied makeup then had a photo shoot.
